چکیده

The growth and survival of organisms often depend on interactions between them. In many cases, these interactions are positive and caused by a cooperative modification of the environment, such as the cooperative breakdown of complex nutrients in microbes [1]–[3] or the construction of elaborate architectures in social insects [4]. However, organisms can similarly display negative interactions by changing the environment in ways that are detrimental for them, eg by resource depletion or the production of toxic byproducts [5]. Here we find an extreme type of negative interactions, in which bacteria modify the environmental pH to such a degree that it leads to a rapid extinction of the whole population, a phenomenon we call ecological suicide. Modification of the pH is more pronounced at higher population densities, and thus ecological suicide is more . CC-BY 4.0 International license peer-reviewed) is the author/funder. Regional suicide rates in the Netherlands: does religion still play a role?

BACKGROUND This study examined the nature of ecological associations between 'religiousness' and suicide rates (1985-1994) in the 11 provinces in the Netherlands. METHODS Indices of religiousness, obtained from a nationwide survey, were used as aggregate predictors of provincial suicide rates in weighted linear regressions, and as individual-level predictors of suicide acceptance in logistic ...

An Ecological Study of Community-Level Correlates of Suicide Mortality Rates in the Flemish Region of Belgium, 1996–2005 MARC HOOGHE, PHD, AND BRAM VANHOUTTE, MA An ecological study of age-standardized suicide rates in Belgian communi-

An ecological study of age-standardized suicide rates in Belgian communities (1996–2005) was conducted using spatial regression techniques. Community characteristics were significantly related to suicide rates. There was mixed support for the social integration perspective: single person households were associated with higher suicide rates, while religious participation was unrelated and both i...

The relationship between obesity and elderly suicide rates: a cross-national study

BACKGROUND An inverse relationship between obesity and suicide has been observed in younger adults, but this has not been examined in the elderly. METHODS A cross-national ecological study examined the independent relationship between the prevalence of obesity and elderly suicide rates, by controlling for potentially confounding variables, using data from the World Health Organization and the...

An ecological approach to explain suicide by self-immolation among women in rural Iran.

Suicide by self-immolation, or lighting oneself on fire, is the most common method of suicide used among women in rural Iran. Understanding the underlying mechanisms that may lead women to commit suicide by self-immolation is necessary for the development of empirically-supported prevention programs. Currently, no integrative approach to the risk factors for self-immolation among women in rural...
